The Gathering
The last photograph of the household was taken around the custom wood table while we shared tea. I am the boy in the blue men’s qipao, the short formal robe families put on a son when the household is being recorded—the male descendant of the old banner gown, not the fitted dress the word later came to mean. Hands folded. The grain of the table under my arms. The curtain, the light, the red knot on the door still belong to an ordinary room. No one in the picture is looking at a future in which the table will be elsewhere and some of the people around it will be gone.
That afternoon the tea was fragrant and it landed. No one in the photograph is performing a ceremony. They are only keeping the old order of the table: heat the ware, wake the leaf, pour low, elders first. A knuckle on the custom wood stands in for a bow. The ritual is the table itself.
Someone in that picture later gave a pack of tea to my brother. After he died I kept it closed. In California the tea I drank never landed the way the tea in that room had landed. The same gestures, cups set down, steam rising—yet the taste stayed slightly in the air, as if it could not find the table.
The pack had been given from a hand in the photograph to my brother, and then to me. I had been saving it. Years afterward I broke the seal. The fragrance only returned.
The first pour was already almost what I had been waiting for. It was the 回甘 that kept pulling—the sweetness returning in the throat, bringing with it the afternoon of the photograph, the wood, the blue qipao, the taste that had once landed without effort. That returning sweetness did not fade.
